4728-summitHistoric preservationists are raising concerns about the potential demolition of three buildings they call iconic on the Plaza.

The three buildings, 4728-4734 Summit, were designed by Nelle Peters and are adjacent to a Nelle Peters Thematic Historic District established in 1989. The buildings are not within the district.

City records show the buildings are owned by the Price Brothers company of Overland Park. The owners applied for pre-demolition and utility shutdown permits in May and early June. They have not applied for demolition permits.

Amanda Crawley, Executive Director of Historic Kansas City, says her group began to get reports that people were being moved out of the buildings several months ago. Because of their architectural style and their relationship to other Nelle Peters Buildings, Crawley says HKC wants to explore options to save them.

“We are concerned about these buildings and are exploring options. We hope to collaborate with the city as well as the current owners to find a solution that works for everyone,” Crawley said.

Calls to Price Brothers were not immediately returned.
