Westport historical speaker discusses lawmen, outlaws and jails

October’s speaker for the Westport Historical Society has written a book on frontier justice in Kansas City.

David W. Jackson, author of Lock Down: Lawmen, Outlaws, and Frontier Justice in Jackson County, Missouri, says the need for frontier justice was obvious from the origination of Jackson County in 1826. His presentation will discuss the earliest Jackson County jails, including data on the men (and women) who lived on both sides of the barred windows and doors.

Jackson is director and archivist of The Orderly Pack Rat, a historical research and consulting service he founded in 1996. He has more than 40 years of experience in personal manuscript collection. He has served as Director of Archives and Education for the Jackson County (MO) Historical Society since 2000, and is the editor of and contributor to the Jackson County Historical Society Journal

• The talk will be held at 2 p.m. on October 12, at the Westport Public Library, 118 Westport Road.
• A reception will follow at the 1855 Harris-Kearney House Museum, located across the street at 40^th & Baltimore.
• Jackson will be available for book sales and signing at the reception.
