Marlene Toms was honored as the West Plaza Volunteer of the Year.

Marlene Toms moved to the West Plaza neighborhood in 1971 never expecting to stay this long. But yesterday, as she received the volunteer of the year award from her neighborhood association, Toms said she feels really invested in that part of the city.

Toms has served as treasurer of West Plaza for about 20 years. She said she has been willing to volunteer so much of her time because she wants to see the neighborhood succeed.

The neighborhood lies Westport Road/43rd and 49th, Madison and State Line. At an awards ceremony Saturday, president Joe Montanari said last year was a great year for the neighborhood.

“After living in West Plaza for more than 30 years, I have never been more optimistic,” he said, citing completion of the West Edge Project on the Plaza, the soon-to-start Swinney School conversion into apartments and office space, and 6-7 new home starts in the neighborhood.
