Ward Parkway will become bike, pedestrian paradise one day in May

cicyloviaThe city is planning another ciclovia (or cyclovia) – a time when streets are blocked off to cars and made available to bicyclists, skaters and runners. Cycle in the City will transform part of Ward Parkway from the Meyer Circle fountain to Gregory Boulevard into an open street festival on May 16 from 2 to 5 p.m.

The City’s Bike KC program will sponsor the event, which it says “is designed to encourage urban exploration in an innovative, healthy, social and fun environment without the interference of motor vehicle traffic.”

Along the course of the event, live DJs, games, music and food will be offered.

The city says Cycle in the City has no start or finish line, just a wide-open, split-lane boulevard with games, music and other entertainment stationed throughout the 2-mile course loop.

Ciclovia events are becoming popular internationally and increasingly in the United States. Kansas City’s first ciclovia was on Main Street in 2013.
