There is a leprechaun to hire, Irish whiskey to stockpile and much more to do to get ready for St. Patrick’s Day on Broadway.

The parade is March 17, but Jeanette Powers, manager of the Uptown Arts Bar, has been preparing for it since January.

“You have to order so much extra product,” she said, especially Irish whiskey and green beer.

Then there is their $5 continental breakfast buffet and the coffee service.

The Uptown Arts Bar has hung out its St. Patrick's Day sign, and is getting ready for parade day.

People get to the area early for the parade that begins at 11 a.m., marching from Linwood and Broadway south on Broadway to 43rd Street.

“We’ll serve 1,000 cups of coffee,” Powers said, “twice that if it’s cold.”

She will have six employees working, two more than their entire normal staff.

And she has an innovative plan for the 150 parking spots behind the bar.

They will sell 85 of them in advance for $20 each. For that they also will provide a chair in a prime spot outside their bar.

“You get to park your car and park your butt,” she said.

She stresses that the bar is family friendly, especially before and during the parade.

“It’s about the event and the holiday and it’s just very nice,” she said.

An experienced leprechaun there will help amuse children waiting for the parade.

Powers will be in at 7 a.m. to help with parking and the bar will open at 9, and she will start to “bounce, bounce, bounce.”

She will serve coffee to police, stop in at other businesses, introduce people to the arts bar.

In past parades the bar has closed for awhile at 2 or 3 p.m. to give workers a rest, she said, but that may not happen this year.

After the parade, some folks go home while others stick around Midtown, going to Westport or visiting the Uptown Arts District, which has new attractions this year, including Krokstrom Klubb & Market at 3601 Broadway and Woody’s Classic Sports Pub at 3740 Broadway.
