Spring outdoor training for women

archeryAfter a cold winter, a city woman might be ready for spring outdoors among wild flowers and wild life.

That opportunity is there with the Discover Nature Women’s Spring Workshop from April 25 to 27.

The event sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation will be at the Lake Doniphan Conference and Retreat Center at Excelsior Springs, Mo.

MDC staff and expert volunteers will teach skills like archery, canoeing, outdoor cooking, using GPS gear and map and compass reading and more.

Women can tailor activities to their interests and skill levels, MDC says.

In the canoeing part, people will learn paddle strokes, safety, water rescue and how to plan a canoe trip.

“We’ll enable them to get down any river in Missouri,” said Lisa LaCombe, workshop organizer.

There will be campfire cooking and training about edible wild plants.

Basic fishing skills will be taught, along with how to clean the fish.

For backpackers, a session will include a short overnight hike and campout.

The workshop is free but Lake Doniphan does charge for lodging and meals. It offers campsites, cabins and motel rooms.
