Same-sex marriages get city pension programs

city-hallThe city council on Thursday expanded city pension plans to cover same-sex marriages.

The action comes after a Jackson County judge recently ruled that the state’s same-sex marriage ban was unconstitutional.

Until then, state law kept the city from providing the pension benefits, said Councilwoman Jan Marcason.

“This is really great,” she said of the change, and fits with the city commitment to be inclusive for all residents.

Mayor Sly James said, “This is another example of us doing the right thing.”
