The Kansas City School District’s new master plan, which calls for school closings and boundary changes, also includes some modifications to the current list of repurposing sites.

The district has said its new master plan will help make use of limited resources as efficiently and effectively as possible, but requires making some difficult decisions. The district started presenting its recommendations to the community this month and will take its final recommendations to the school board in February of 2016.

Now it has shared a list of recommendations that include changes to the current list of repurposing sites, including:

The Master Plan recommendations included changes to the current list of repurposing sites, including:

  • Move from “repurposing/surplus” list to “mothballed for KCPS future use” list:
    • Bingham– KCPS is in the process of soliciting a demolition contractor. Once the building is demolished, the site will be held for future KCPS use. Interim uses such as community field use may be considered.
    • Bryant– The Bryant site is needed for future KCPS use. Upon approval of the Master Plan, KCPS will work with the neighborhood to determine if demolition of the building or identifying a long-term tenant is the best interim use for the site.
    • Fairview– Fairview shares a site with an open elementary school, Pitcher, and maintaining site control is important for the future stability of Pitcher. As such, KCPS is looking to identify an appropriate short or long-term tenant for the site.  If the site becomes a nuisance/safety concern, KCPS will need to consider demolition of the building.
  • Move from “mothballed for KCPS future use” list to “repurposing/surplus” list:
    • Robeson– Robeson’s location and building condition do not make it a strong candidate for a mothballed site. Upon approval of the Master Plan, KCPS will begin a sales/disposition process for the site.
  • Proposed closures and add to “mothballed for KCPS future use” list:
    • Three sites have been identified for closure: Southwest Early College Campus (SWECC), Attucks and Paige elementary schools. All three sites represent opportunities for future KCPS school use; as such, they would be moved to the mothballed list. In order to ensure the buildings are not targets for vandalism, KCPS would work to identify tenants (non-profit organizations, community partners, etc) that could occupy the buildings until they are needed for KCPS school use.
