Scholarships funded by Kansas City casinos available

Young people in Kansas City have a unique opportunity to apply for scholarships – funded by casino gaming operations.

The Port Authority made agreements with those casino operators to make contributions into a fund for ten years.

The Missouri Opportunities Scholarship Fund scholarships are now available to permanent Kansas City residents from 17 to 25 years of age who want to go to college or vocational school.

“Higher education or technical training is a path to a better livelihood, a better life, better citizens and, ultimately, a better city,” James said in an announcement. “These scholarships can ease the financial burden for students who need it.”

To be eligible, students must be a high school graduate or have a GED equivalent; be 17 to 25 years old at the beginning of the school term for which assistance is paid; and reside in a Kansas City, Missouri, household within certain income limitations.

The scholarships are awarded annually and paid by the semester when students meet academic and document requirements. The minimum scholarship is $1,000 per academic year ($500 per semester) and may vary.
