Red Cross opens doors after Hyde Park Apartments fire

hyde park apartmentsA fire at the Hyde Park Apartments at 36th and Broadway sent nine people to a temporary shelter at the American Red Cross yesterday, during the coldest temperatures in recent history.

The fire was contained to the fourth floor, but when sprinklers went off, electricity was turned off on some floors.

The Red Cross, just down the street at 211 W. Armour, opened a temporary shelter for those with no place to go.

The Red Cross said this morning it hasn’t made a decision yet about whether the temporary shelter will remain open tonight.
