Popular 60s local coffeehouse singer Dana Cooper returns

Dana Cooper, a singer who began performing at the Vanguard Coffeehouse in Midtown in the 1960s, is coming back to Kansas City for a concert Sept. 7.

Many who haunted coffeehouses in Kansas City in those days remember Cooper. He performed at the Vanguard Coffeehouse, the Sign Coffeehouse ,and sang with local bands including Ice and Cherokee. Cooper left Kansas City for California in the 1970s and now lives in Nashville. But he continues to perform and usually comes to Kansas City once a year.

Cooper will be performing at the Pilgrim Chapel in Hyde Park.

Cooper is a recipient of the 2014 Heritage Series Musician Award, which recognizes an outstanding musician or musical group whose body of work represents a major contribution to Kansas City’s musical heritage. Past Heritage Series Musician award winners include Luqman Hamza, legendary jazz musician; Danny Cox, KC’s Blues icon; and the Wild Women, a popular jazz ensemble.  The Heritage Series performance by Cooper will be recorded on CD.  The intent of all Heritage Series recordings is to preserve for posterity the live performance of a distinguished musician (who either lives here or has deep roots in the city’s musical heritage) in the acoustically perfect environment of Pilgrim Chapel, which due to its unique design, makes the sound of music sung or played there extraordinary.
