A photographer who covered the Iraq War and later photographed the bedrooms of dead servicemen and women will speak at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on April 30.

Photographer Ashley Gilbertson won critical acclaim for his coverage of the war, earning an Overseas Press Club award in 2004 for his photos of Fallujah. Gilbertson’s photographic chronicle of the Iraq War was published as a book, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, in 2007.

Since then Gilbertson has focused on veterans’ issues, including the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide. For his project Bedrooms of the Fallen, Gilbertson photographed the bedrooms of American servicemen and women who were either killed in battle or committed suicide upon their return to the United States.

The event is co-sponsored by Photography Society, a group of Nelson-Atkins members which supports the activities of the museum’s photography department.
