The Westport Center for the Arts presents “Stealing Kandinsky,” an original play by Scott Myers, in a live, staged reading on Monday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m.
This full-length, two-act play centers around Vassily Kandinsky, known as the “founder” of modern abstract art. Kandinsky and the Blue Rider arts movement of which he was a leader, were considered “degenerate artists” by the Nazis, and their art was suppressed and stolen. Decades later, in this contemporary play, a modern art museum curator, Richard Wolfson, his CEO boss Lucy Swan, and upstart colleague Jerome Jupiter, are forever changed by a case of modern art theft that is haunted by past crimes against art. Jealousy, forgiveness, intrigue, betrayal and internal psychological conflicts give birth to tragic and redemptive consequences.
“Art can be stolen from artists in many ways. ‘Stealing Kandinsky’ explores the value of art and an artist’s fight to be valued,” said Myers.“
The staged reading is being directed by Jordan Fox. The cast includes Kansas City actors Granvile O’Neal, Priest Hughes, Celia Gannon, Kevin Albert, Tim Burks, Wil Andrews-Weiss and Chris Gleeson. Tickets are $10 or $7.00 for senior citizens and students. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance through the Brown Paper Tickets website.
The reading will be performed at the Buffalo Room in the back of the Westport Flea Market, 817 Westport Road, Kansas City, Missouri.

Westport Center for the Arts was founded in 2006 to support community art and the local artists. In addition to Westport Center for the Arts Theatre, WCA presents monthly Brown Bag Concerts and Kids Team Up for Art at five Kansas City Public Libraries.
