Local police say keeping this message in mind could have prevented four people in Central Patrol from having things stolen from their cars last weekend alone.
Sometimes a repetitive phrase helps us remember something important.
That’s what Midtown police hope will happen with the new slogan “Put your junk in your trunk.”
At a recent out-of-town conference, MainCor Director Diane Burnette saw a sign with the slogan on it and thought it was catchy.
She brought the sign back to Kansas City, and since then, Master Patrol Officer Jim Schriever has been urging residents to keep its idea in mind.
The basic message is simple – don’t leave laptops, cell phones or even loose change visible in your car when you’re not in it.
Schriever says residents could reduce thefts from vehicles by over 90 percent just by following this rule. He reminds people that it only takes 15 seconds for a thief to break your window and steal your property, often without making much noise.
He says many neighborhoods have contacted him and are adopting the slogan.
But there’s more work to be done, he says.
Four people in Central Patrol had their cars broken into over the weekend…so apparently they haven’t gotten the message yet.
