Tonight at sunset, neighbors in the Valentine, Roanoke and Coleman Highlands neighborhoods with be lighting festival holiday candles along their curbs.

The lighting of the luminerias is a tradition in these three Midtown neighborhoods.

The luminarias are actually small lanterns made from folded paper bags, sand and candles. They are popular Christmas Eve decorations in New Mexico and elsewhere.

Putting together the lanterns brings together children and adults in Midtown on Christmas Eve. Neighbors get together earlier in the day to assemble and set out the lanterns, and then come back at sunset to light them.

Those living in one of the three neighborhood should check with their neighborhood association for details on making the luminerias.

Anyone is free to drive or walk through the neighborhoods to enjoy the show.

Best routes: drive along Valentine and Karnes. If walking, park at Belleview and Valentine.
