Two people in the Manheim Park neighborhood wanted regular trash dumpsters and support for the community garden, so they applied for a private grant.

They got it and today the Community Capital Fund Foundation gave them a check for $960.

Amanda Wilson from the fund presented it at the community garden on the 4200 block of Forest.

The non-profit started awarding the grants in 2012 to promote neighborhood capacity building.

They go to poorer areas in east and south Kansas City. “We try to help people help themselves, Wilson said. “A lot of these events are a springboard for further community engagement.”

In Manheim, Susan Lackamp applied for “neighbors helping neighbors” with Larry Thompson, who applied for the Jolet Home, a home there for the mentally ill that his family has operated since 1977.

They said they want to bring the diverse neighborhood closer together.

People work together when the dumpsters come to help the elderly and each other get yard trash to the big containers.

Working in the community garden also brings people together and some of the food will also go to people at the home, they said.
