Lawyer admits to stealing from St. Luke’s

A former Kansas City attorney pleaded guilty today to stealing more than $1.2 million from St. Luke’s Health System.

Alan B. Gallas, 64, pleaded guilty in federal court to mail fraud for stealing the money while he was a lawyer and partner in the law firm of Gallas & Shultz.

Also from a media release by federal prosecutors:

Gallas, who was responsible for St. Luke’s account with the firm, was supposed to attempt to collect on unpaid patient accounts after a certain time.

As money was collected it went into the law firm’s trust account before it was to be remitted to St. Luke’s.

From 2009 through July 2015, Gallas withheld more than 2,500 payments from the hospital totaling more than $1.2 million.

He could be sentenced later to up to 20 years in prison and must pay back the stolen money.
