A Jackson County judge on Friday sentenced a Kansas City man to 30 years for the murder of a UMKC student and other crimes.
Alonzo D. Ruff, 22, pleaded guilty previously to killing 23-year-old Aaron Markarian, 23, and shooting three other people in a March 21, 2013 home invasion robbery.
Markarian was an opera singer with at the conservatory of music and dance who would have graduated within months.
The victims were shot at a birthday party in a residence near UMKC after they gave robbers their property.
The thieves took about $400 in cash, cellphones and a small amount of marijuana.
A co-defendant, Anthony J. Williams, is still awaiting trial in the case. He was allegedly armed with a machete during the robbery.
