KC businessman cheats on taxes, will pay with prison time

A Kansas City businessman who collected taxes from employees and used the money to gamble and buy cars and a lake house will have time to reflect on the error of his ways.

A federal judge in Kansas City on Tuesday sentenced Joseph Patrick Balano, 54, to two years and three months in prison.

Also from a media release from federal prosecutors:

Balano, owner of Global Employment Group Inc., pleaded guilty last year.

He admitted withholding $260,770 in tax money from employees from April 2008 to April 2009 and keeping it for himself instead of paying the IRS.

He also did not pay the employer part of the tax for another loss to the IRS of $232,672.

He spent the money on himself and family members, including things like gambling, car payments and mortgage payments on a residence and lake house.
