JJs restaurant on the Plaza is reopening Wednesday following a natural gas explosion and fire in February 2013. Popular server Megan Cramer, who died in the tragedy, will be honored by a plaque as the new restaurant opens.

The new location is in the Polsinelli Buildings on the west edge of the Plaza.

JJs management says the dinner menu will be exactly the same as it was on the last day of business and the new space is designed to give the same feeling as the previous one.

Designer Jan Russell of Johanna Marr Design said the goal was to recreate the original JJs atmosphere of “rustic old world influence.”

“My goal was to bring the warmth of the former building,” Russell said. “JJs used to wrap its arms around you and I wanted to bring back that same feeling in a brand new, modern office building.” Arched doorways, terra cotta walls and Mike Savage artwork will all contribute to the sensation that guests “are still in JJs.”

Mayor Sly James plans to be on hand for the reopening. He’ll be raising money for the Turn the Page KC charity.

“Don’t let anyone say that Kansas City isn’t one of the best cities in the country. The support from the community during all the trials and tribulations and rebuilding has been amazing and I am so proud to call Kansas City home,” said operator Jimmy Frantze.

JJs will be open for lunch at 11 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, and for dinner 7 nights a week. The bar will offer happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

“My goal was to bring the warmth of the former building.” Poor choice of words, maybe. 😉
