Holiday fireworks will mean more injuries

People are getting ready for the big fireworks day Saturday and so are emergency rooms.

Last July 4^th, 33 people rushed to KU Hospital for treatment of fireworks injuries.

Here are more facts from the hospital:

• Three of the 33 were injured severely enough to be hospitalized. Among the most serious injuries were blown off fingers, third degree burns and serious eye damage.
• The trauma team there is again ramping up its “fast track” response this year.
• Last year, patients needing medical attention ranged in age from 5 to 52, with an average age 26.
• Twenty two males made up the majority of those with serious injuries.
• Sparklers and mortars caused the most damage.
