Holiday fireworks will mean more injuries

fireworksPeople are getting ready for the big fireworks day Saturday and so are emergency rooms.

Last July 4th, 33 people rushed to KU Hospital for treatment of fireworks injuries.

Here are more facts from the hospital:

  • Three of the 33 were injured severely enough to be hospitalized. Among the most serious injuries were blown off fingers, third degree burns and serious eye damage.
  • The trauma team there is again ramping up its “fast track” response this year.
  • Last year, patients needing medical attention ranged in age from 5 to 52, with an average age 26.
  • Twenty two males made up the majority of those with serious injuries.
  • Sparklers and mortars caused the most damage.
