Highwoods Properties said today it is putting the Country Club Plaza on the market.

In a news release, Highwoods President and CEO Ed Fritsch said the company has purchased Monarch Centre in Buckhead (Atlanta) and SunTrust Financial Centre in Tampa. They are part of the company’s new focus on “best business district office properties.

The plan, he said, is to fund these acquisitions by selling the Country Club Plaza.

I’m excited–yet anxious!–about the C.C. Plaza being up for sale! Let’s just hope that native Kansas Citian preservationists buy it–and not some out-of-town developers!

All I could think about Highwoods was: don’t let the door hit you on your way outa town.
I don’t think they ever understood that the Plaza had to retain its unique qualities to draw people out of the suburbs. Depending on the elusive tourist is not reliable. I’d pretty much quit going there, but then I don’t much shop for entertainment. And there’s no more Harzfelds or Jack Henry.
