In the something different category, you can soon help study Monarch butterflies in the heart of the city.
Monarch Mania activities are Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave.
It runs from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and includes talks on how the caterpillar undergoes metamorphosis into a butterfly and on its migration patterns, the Missouri Department of Conservation says.
Participants may also get a chance to tag and release a butterfly.
Scientists put little paper tags on butterflies to gather information such as where captured and tagged. If found, the tags include a contact address to report the find, which helps track flight patterns and numbers of the butterflies.
They migrate south during winter to Mexico and their descendants come north in spring.
