Children played, a best-selling author showed up and after three years of work, the Karnes playground in Roanoke Park opened April 30.

Rachel Porter of Coleman Highlands, one of the two mothers who started it all, said, “It all came together beautifully.”

Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, who used to live in Coleman Highlands and whose parents still do, was there for the ribbon cutting.

The supporting cast in playground creation included parents in the neighborhoods of Coleman Highlands, Roanoke, Volker and Valentine. Lindsay Severns of Roanoke was the other mother who started the effort.

Hufft Projects in the Roanoke Park area contributed design work, the city parks department helped and so did Public Improvement Advisory Committee funding.

Porter said they wanted the playground to fit in well with the natural surroundings and it does, nestled close to trees.
