Free tax assistance in Midtown Kansas CityMidtown Kansas City seniors and other taxpayers can get free tax assistance again this year.

Volunteers trained through the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Tax-Aide program are offering receive tax counseling, return preparation, and electronic filing of their local, state, and federal income taxes.

The free tax assistance is available senior citizens and low-and-moderate-income (less than $60,000) taxpayers in filing their 1040 tax forms and basic schedules.  Same-sex couples who have been legally married in any jurisdiction are now eligible to file jointly their US and Missouri returns.  Taxpayers with complex tax returns are advised to seek professional tax assistance.

Assistance will be provided for all 2013 tax forms, including US, Missouri, and Kansas income tax returns and Kansas City MO earnings tax.  Requests for Missouri rent and property tax rebates may also be filed electronically.  It will also be possible, in March and April, to complete income tax forms and rent or property tax rebates for the preceding three years.

  • For residents in the Midtown, the nearest AARP Tax-Aide site is located at the Salvation Army–Westport Temple, 500 W 39th Street.  Tax preparation will be provided on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 9 a.m. to noon from February 4 through April 15, 2014. Taxpayers can stop by the Salvation Army between 8 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. or call 816.753.6040 to check on their eligibility and make an appointment.
