FBI warns about phone scam

phone-genericThe FBI says it is not calling people to demand payment for fines, and anyone getting such a call should suspect it is coming from a scammer.

The agency says it has gotten several reports from citizens who got calls appearing to be from the FBI’s office.

“Several inquiries have been received by the FBI to validate the authenticity of these calls. During these calls, an individual claims to be a special agent of the FBI and informs the individual he/she has outstanding warrants, IRS fines or owes a financial debt, and instructs the individuals on providing payment. The calls appear on caller id to be from the FBI Kansas City Division’s main number,” the agency said.

However, the FBI says it does not contact individuals and demand payments for fines.

It is warning people that this is a scam to get people to reveal personal information.
