Explore underground Midtown with historic foundation

You may drive along 31st Street every day and not realize there’s a small city of businesses 140 feet below you.

The “downtown underground” is an office, warehouse and storage facility developed in 1959 by Lester Dean, Sr. The underground is located between Southwest Trafficway and Southwest Boulevard.

It lies 10 stories underground, meaning it needs no heating or cooling and maintains a consistent temperature.

The Historic Kansas City Foundation is offering a tour of the underground for its members only on Sunday, Oct. 20. The tour was advertised as a bike tour, but has been changed to a walking tour.
