Events recall Battle of Westport 150 years ago

battle-of-westportLocal history buffs are commemorating the Battle of Westport, the largest Civil War battle west of the Mississippi, which took place 150 years ago this week.

Battle of Westport 150 events begin on Thursday and continue through the weekend.

There will be reenactments in Swope Park with mounted cavalry, guided walking tours of the battlefield, exhibits at the Visitor Center, Civil War medical demonstrations, period artisans and special appearances by historic figures.

The commemoration will begin on Thursday at Loose Park with a one-hour walking tour of the portion of the battlefield around Loose Park.  The events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will occur on the battlefield in and around Swope Park and Battle of Westport Museum, 6601 Swope Parkway.

These events are free and open to the public except for the special Friday evening dinner with the troops on the battlefield.
