District says Westport High School decision coming

westport-high-schoolA decision on the future of Westport High School is expected this month, according to the Kansas City School District Repurposing Office.

Two development groups, Foutch Brothers and Kansas City Sustainable Development Partners, made their most recent presentations in February. To review proposal presentations, CLICK HERE.

The district has also provided updates on two other repurposing projects:

  • Westport Middle School: Kansas City Sustainable Development Partners, LLC (KCSDP) purchased Westport Middle in Jan 2014 for reuse as a mixed-use development. On Feb 23, 2015, KCPS hosted a public meeting for KCSDP to provide a project update and to garner community feedback on proposed changes to the original redevelopment plan (remove the residential component and convert to more non-profit/commercial use). After a review of the proposed changes and community feedback, KCPS approved KCSDP’s requested changes on Mar 11.  Construction will begin in late summer/early fall. • Switzer-West: In Jan 2015, Foutch Brothers, LLC purchased the Switzer-West Complex at 1810 and 1829 Madison.  On May 11, 2015, Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) hosted a public meeting for Foutch Brothers to provide a project update and to garner community feedback on proposed changes to the original redevelopment plan (increase the number of residential units and decrease commercial/community space). After a review of the proposed changes and consideration of the feedback received from the community, KCPS approved Foutch Brothers’ requested changes on May 27. In consideration of the requested changes, Foutch Brothers will provide the Westside community with complimentary use of the auditorium, and a small meeting and art gallery space, as well as use of the outdoor volleyball court. Foutch Brothers will also coordinate with local community organizations to ensure that local Westside residents receive information about residential rates and availability.  Foutch Brothers anticipates construction to begin in July 2015.  For additional info about the project and community feedback, CLICK HERE.
