District offers update on middle school project

middle-school-boundaries-2014The school district will provide an update on its Middle School Project during a community meeting 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24 in the cafeteria at Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts.

The district says in a press release it is working in partnership with parents, community members, and its employee team to renovate and reopen two middle schools in the fall of 2014. More than 400 seventh graders will attend Central Middle School and Northeast Middle School for the 2014-2015 school year. The schools will grow into seventh and eighth grades during the 2015-2016 school year.

This effort will provide facilities, teachers, programs and social supports needed to best improve student achievement for the “tween-age” population (students in grades 7 and 8). The project began about a year ago. It marks a major step forward towards achieving the goals set by Superintendent Dr. R. Stephen Green, especially in the areas of student achievement, college and career readiness, student attendance and parent and community engagement, the district says.

KCPS administrators and staff members will explain the status of the project and be on-hand to answer questions during the April 24 meeting. All interested members of the public are encouraged to attend.
