Old paint, batteries, and electronic devices – these are among the hard-to-recycle materials can be recycled Saturday at a city-hosted event.
Saturday is America Recycles Day. The city is hoping to help people dispose of materials as well as increase awareness of the importance of recycling.
“The average Kansas City resident generates about seven pounds of trash per day, but only recycles a pound and a half of waste per week,” said Senior Environmental Officer Marleen Leonce in a news release. “More than ninety-percent of the residential waste we generate can be recycled, reused or repurposed. We’re doing well as a city, but we can do much better.”
The November 14 event will include a number of community partners that specialize in collecting hard-to-recycle trash:
- Surplus Exchange: cell phones, printers and other electronic devices. Monitors will be recycled at a cost of $10 – $15 per item; all other items will be recycled free of charge.
- Disabled American Veterans: Clothing, accessories, books, footwear, toys, linens, house wares, small appliances (all in good working condition).
- Truman Habitat for Humanity Kansas City: Construction salvage, tools, building materials
- Ripple Glass: All glass food and beverage containers of any color (including mason jars and glass drinking vessels such as wine glasses).
- City of Kansas City: Waste tires; plastic bags; household batteries; household hazardous waste such as batteries, oils, paint and antifreeze.
- RevolveKC: Bicycles.
- Avenue of Life: Mattresses, furniture, household appliances
- Document Resources: Off-site document shredding only (documents must be in bags or boxes); limit of five medium boxes or bags per person
