City acts to fix loophole in red light camera law

A city council committee Wednesday approved a change to the red light camera law that allows the city to fine corporate owners of vehicles whose drivers run the lights.

Under the current law, cars registered to the companies could not be fined and the drivers escaped fines, lawyers told the council public safety committee.

A Missouri appeals court ruling recently upheld the law change that the city is making, they said.

Councilman John Sharp said, “This really is a fairness issue as well as having an ordinance approved by a court of Missouri.”

The change now goes to the full city council for approval.

Under it, companies that own the vehicles will have to pay the fines and then can deal with their employees’ driving habits however they want, lawyers said.
