Church installs solar panels

Second Presbyterian Church estimates it will save $100,000 over the next 20 years because of the 100 new solar panels it has installed on its roof.

A Midtown church estimates it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 26 tons a year, thanks to the newly-installed solar panels on its roof.

Second Presbyterian Church at 55th and Oak put 102 of the solar panels on top of the facility. The church estimates the solar energy system will produce 33,800 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year and cover about 8 percent of its energy costs That could save $100,000 over the next 20 years.

Excess energy will be sold back to Kansas City Power and Light.

According to a press release, the project began as an initiative of church’s building and grounds committee chaired by Jason Jeffries.
