Charges in fire that led to firefighters’ deaths

A Kansas City woman has been charged with arson and two counts of murder, a result of the investigation of a fire on Independence Avenue that led to the death of two Kansas City firefighters on Oct. 12.

Thu Hong Nguyen, 43, the has been charged with recklessly starting the fire.  According to court records, a federal fire investigator for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found evidence that the fire began in a storage room inside the LN Salon and Spa at 2614 Independence Avenue. Nguyen is believed to have been the last person to leave the salon on the night of the fire.

The prosecutor’s office says the defendant told investigators she received insurance proceeds from other recent fires.

The fire on Oct. 12, 2015, resulted in the deaths of two firefighters, Larry Leggio and John Mesh.

Prosecutors have requested a bond of $2 million.
