Fred Arbanas was officially sworn in as temporary county executive on Tuesday. He was appointed by outgoing County Executive Mike Sanders, who has stepped down to spend more time with his family.

In his four decades in the county legislature, Arbanas has served as its chair four different times. Before entering politics, Arbanas played for the Kansas City Chiefs.

As he took office, Arbanas thanked Mike Sanders for his years of service to Jackson County.

“I believe he was, as I have said several times, the best county executive we have had.  The county has an excellent leadership team and a strong legislature. I am happy to take the reins and help keep the county focused while the legislature considers a permanent replacement,” he said.

The legislature has up to 30 days to pick a permanent replacement to fill out the remainder of the year. Legislator and former Royals star Frank White has announced interest in that position and seems to have strong support.
